Forge Base Repair

Forge Base Repair

While forging bases are meant to last decades, they do eventually need repair. Absolute Welding and Machining has the capability to weld bases up to 75,000 lbs at their Greenville, Indiana facility and, for larger bases, Absolute has the equipment to do repairs at your facility. To date our largest repair was on a 300,000 lb forging base that had an approximately 28” deep on one side of the sow block seating area and side walls were out of tolerance.

Absolute was brought in after the base had been removed from the ground. Absolute cut the crack out of the base then built an oven around the base. Using onsite natural gas, the base was brought up to temperature and specialized welding equipment was set up to weld repair the base. The base cracking was repaired using an alloy that would provide the most durability and the walls of the sow block seating area were layered. The base was post-weld heat treated in place. Upon completion of welding and heat treating, mobile machinist were brought in to machine base back to specs.
